Synopsis

When a Tiger Dies: The Life of Walter Tanaka is the autobiography of a Japanese-American who grew up in California during the Great Depression and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. Walter's twenty-year military career took him from coal-shoveling detail to intelligence work in the Pacific to a commission during the occupation of Japan - while his family was incarcerated in an internment camp in Poston, Arizona, treated like the enemy he was working so hard to defeat. His story is told in his own words, taken from hours of interviews and dozens of pages of his writing. The book offers a personal glimpse into key moments in American history and paints a picture of a remarkable individual.

About the Authors

Chelsey Tanaka is Walter Tanaka's granddaughter and the editor of When a Tiger Dies: The Life of Walter Tanaka. She compiled the book from nine hours of oral history recordings, dozens of documents Walter wrote, hundreds of family photos, and decades of interviews conducted by his children. When she's not working on family history projects, Chelsey is a product manager who lives in San Francisco with her husband and son. She publishes under the imprint Persimmon House, named for the giant persimmon tree behind her grandfather's longtime San Jose home - where her sister now lives - which still bears fruit every year.

Glynnis Koike is a flexible and adaptable designer based in California who specializes in print design and illustration. She is Walter Tanaka's granddaughter.
