The Sane Read: A News Media Field Guide
If you glanced at the red and thought “Republican bias,” or at the blue and thought “Ugh, Democrat bias,” this book is for you. It’s here to help each of us notice our blind spots and see the world around us more calmly and clearly.
This book offers something better than hot takes: a calm, repeatable way to read the news and keep your cool. You’ll learn simple tools to spot spin, break out of silos, and build a personal Sane Read Media Trust Ledger so you’re less reactive and more grounded. Instead of being swept along by every headline, you’ll know how to pause, test, and decide what truly deserves your attention.
The Sane Read Objective
I developed this series as someone who spent years in the storm of battling through the news and deciphering critical information. Hours of news and podcasts that left me frustrated and unsure what to trust and whose day job, as a business owner, contract professional, and retired 20-year military law enforcement officer, depended on sorting real-world facts from noise. Over time, I started to see patterns in how different outlets framed the same story: what they emphasized, what they downplayed, and what they quietly left out. Drawing on that mix of front-line experience, international work, and attention to detail, those patterns turned into practical tools, ways to spot spin, compare narratives, and separate solid facts from background noise. This book exists to hand you those tools, so you don’t have to build them the hard way.
This Book Was Born Out of Those Patterns
The tools in this book grew from that steady, eyes-open learning, so you can use them too—without having to burn years of your life in the outrage cycle. I didn’t want another finger-pointing manifesto about “their bias.” I wanted to grapple honestly with our biases, mine included, and ask: how do we live as citizens when every story is framed, every headline is contested, and feeds are built to provoke?
My Hope For You
My hope is that you leave these pages not cynical, but resilient, able to pause before judgment, read across the spectrum, resist cheap outrage, and step outside to remember that truth is found in people, places, and our relationships as much as in pixels. Thank you for caring enough to look for truth, even when it’s inconvenient, and for believing our republic is worth keeping. It is and you are part of the reason it will endure.
