About the Authors

W. R. LEIBOWITZ is a lawyer and writer who grew up in Washington, D.C., with dogs, cats, gerbils, two brothers, a sister, and a snake. She dreamed of having one child and no pets. Her child had other plans, however, and they have lived with guinea pigs, birds, and, of course, Ray, a Siberian husky mix. Her career as a lawyer took an unexpected path, from public defenderto associate at a law firm, to a legal journalist, to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), a unit in the Department of Justice. At the NIJ, she was grateful to work with brilliant, dedicated lawyers and scientists who helped set up cold-case units at police departments and helped the police use science to solve crimes. Some of those police departments, of course, work with service dogs, such as the ones that Ray admires.
