About the Author

I grew up in Northern California, a place where vineyards roll into the horizon and the evening air carries the scent of oak and sun-warmed earth. Some of my fondest memories live in those summers spent at my aunt's house, where "happy hour" was a ritual. My uncle would set off into the twilight with his metal detector, chasing hidden treasures beneath the soil, while my aunt entrusted me with a different treasure: a glass of wine.My job was simple but mysterious-to breathe in, to notice, to name. "Cherry, spice, dark fruits," I would offer, shyly at first. At times the scents were overwhelming, even off-putting, but slowly I learned to close my eyes, to surrender, and to listen to what the wine was trying to say. Beneath the surface were layers-primary, secondary, tertiary notes-whispers of a grape's origin, of oak barrels and cellars, of sun, soil, and season. Those evenings planted something in me. They taught me that wine is never just what's in the glass. It is history, geography, memory, and imagination, all colliding in one sip. They sparked the questions that continue to guide my work today: Why does wine taste this way? How much comes from the grape? From the soil? From the land and the people who tend it?That sense of wonder, born in childhood, has grown into my life's work: exploring indigenous grape varieties, uncovering forgotten stories, and weaving together the threads of culture, history, and taste. My writing-The Abstracted Vine and beyond-is an invitation to join me in that journey. To hold the glass, to breathe deeply, and to find not just flavors, but stories waiting to be discovered.
