Synopsis

In "Good Works, Love Rules: Facing Change, Resurrecting Community, Transforming Our Fractured World Together," Simona Perry presents an insightful ethnographic exploration that empowers communities to develop critical consciousness and cultural synthesis in the face of rapid industrial change. Drawing from her transformative journey from a marine biologist to a community-engaged researcher, Perry unveils the profound impacts of the shale gas boom in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

Through vivid storytelling, she highlights the environmental threats, disruption of traditional livelihoods, and fractured community ties experienced by local residents. The book delves into the systemic issues driving these challenges, examining the effects of global capitalism and neoliberal policies on local well-being. With a focus on critical consciousness and collective action, Perry shares successful community initiatives and organizing strategies that foster resilience and agency.

"Good Works, Love Rules" offers a step-by-step framework for resurrecting communities—rebuilding social connections, revitalizing economies, and restoring environmental health. In its final chapters, the book connects individual well-being with community care and global responsibility, providing a message of hope and empowerment. Readers will come away with practical guidance for engaging in their local communities as part of a larger movement for social and environmental justice.
