Malcolm Holzman is an American architect, who practices in New York City. He is a partner of Steinberg Hart and was a founding partner of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, they received the AIA's Architecture Firm Award in 1981. Born in Newark, New Jersey he holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute and an Honorary Doctor of fine Arts from the University of the South. He has designed civic, academic and public use structures throughout the United States, especially libraries, museums, and performing arts venues. Beginning in the 1960's Holzman was an early champion of the creative reuse of older buildings at a time when the profession of architecture embraced pristine modernism, exemplified by urban renewal. He was an advocate of sustainable building practices and expressed his belief that the most effective and often overlooked method of greening modern buildings is to repurpose existing buildings and to design structures with long lifespans. His collagist plans with rotated grids and use of color quickly established him as a pioneer.
