From humble beginnings in Patna, India, to building the world's largest ducting company, Ramesh Bhatia's life is a testament to resilience, integrity, and daring. Born into a middle-class family during the turmoil of post-Partition India, Ramesh left home with nothing but an engineering degree and $50 in his pocket, determined to rewrite his story in New York City.
Through grit, brilliance, and an uncanny ability to seize the right opportunities, he rose from being an engineer at a major oil consultancy to a pivotal leader managing global projects. But Ramesh's defining moment came when he took an unexpected risk: accepting a job in a tiny Michigan town at a fledgling company called ATCO. This leap into the unknown not only transformed ATCO into a global powerhouse but also reshaped the entire industry.
Packed with powerful lessons, this memoir is more than an inspiring story - it's a roadmap for any aspiring entrepreneur or leader dreaming of making a profound impact. Taking Calculated Risks is the compelling journey of a man who built an empire on courage, empathy, and unwavering self-belief.

Ramesh Bhatia is the retired President of ATCO Rubber Products, Inc., and the founder and chairman of the Ramesh and Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation. As a child in Patna, India, Ramesh witnessed rampant corruption in the business world. He vowed to leave his home country to achieve success with dignity and respect. With support from his brother and friends, he immigrated to New York City in 1969 with only a mechanical engineering degree and $50 to his name. He quickly rose through the ranks at the consulting firm Frederick R. Harris, becoming a project manager for complex oil and gas projects around the globe. Renowned for his talents and ingenuity, he was recruited by ATCO Rubber Products in 1978. Never afraid to take calculated risks, he led the company's relocation from Michigan to Texas and grew it from 40 employees to nearly 1,500. As CEO, Ramesh expanded ATCO's reach to customers in over 35 countries. By innovating ATCO's supply chain management, perfecting proprietary technology, and implementing a quick delivery network years before Amazon, Ramesh established ATCO as the gold standard in commercial ducting. Today, he and his wife dedicate their time to the Ramesh and Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation, which they founded in 2006. The Foundation is committed to creating meaningful change around the world, funding innovative solutions and programs that enrich communities and serve the common good. He currently lives in Irving, Texas, with his wife.
