Synopsis
Shades of My Mother: Moving Beyond That Reflection takes readers on a journey through the transformative years of the 1940s and 1950s, a time when societal expectations for women were narrowly defined. Author Nancy Descoteaux Culos recounts her own story of breaking free from those traditions and forging a path forward. Growing up with expectations of a conventional life, Nancy had imagined herself as a wife, mother, and perhaps a part-time nurse. However, a life-altering event in her marriage shattered those illusions, forcing her to reassess her future. While some doors closed, other unexpected opportunities emerged, leading her to make difficult choices. In her memoir, Nancy reflects on the remarkable influence her unconventional mother had on her, even though she failed to fully appreciate it at the time. She also describes how she learned to integrate competing desires and ambitions more fully into her life, ultimately finding a path that led her to personal freedom and professional success. In the end, Shades of My Mother is the tale of the determination, resilience, and self-discovery of a woman in her own time.

About the Author
Nancy Descoteaux Culos is a lifelong resident of Connecticut and currently lives in West Hartford, sharing a home with her daughter Elise Alekshun, a Registered Physical Therapist, and three grandchildren, Brendan, Gabby, and Caitlyn. Frequent visits from her son, Joe Massicotte, an attorney in Washington, D.C. to the Woodridge Lake house add to the good vibe and positive energy. She now enjoys the simple pleasures of life with friends and family: yoga, reading, writing, walking and working on her golf game, an endless quest.
