Mabel Isabel Murray died on December 8, 1898, aged five years, six months, and one day. Her life is commemorated with the smallest, most unassuming tombstone in the Brainard Cemetery, the second-smallest cemetery within the Portland, Oregon Metro area. The puzzle triggered by Mabel Isabel's memorial starts conversations among two couples - chats that broaden into questions of life, art, and relationships. This story starts with a graveyard filled with crows and ends there as well. Sandwiched between are friends and artists, city parks, and carved crows. And the cemetery takes on its own character, beloved by all.

June Underwood lives in Portland, Oregon, in the Montavilla Neighborhood, a little-noticed suburb that also featured in her collection of short stories Wednesdays at Monti's. June's checkered career includes teaching Victorian literature at a small Kansas University, spending time in Wyoming, Virginia, and Long Island, exhibiting quilted art in Ohio as well as oil painting and wire sculptures in Portland, and running two marathons just after she turned fifty. The marathons are long behind her, as are Wyoming and Long Island. A resident with her husband, Jer, in Portland for more than 35 years, she found and finds the city a rich and wonderful place. Her writings explore how a small city enriches the lives of its elderly inhabitants in unexpected ways. She writes, as she says, out of her own experience.
