Literature, by definition, is a conversation between writer and reader. Interesting, then, that many of these microfictions hadtheir origins in conversations, chance encounters, moments observed or overheard. Feeling much like a magpie building its nest, there are bits and pieces cribbed and cadged and culled from far too many people to name. Ideas, images, characters, places coalesced into short takes on who and what we are—or avoid to be. (One friend told me that in his drinking days it took him seven beers to pilot his boat from Cleveland to Port Clinton. There was a lede no writer could resist!) The sharp-eyed will spot aspects of their lives assigned, arranged, altered here. As with historical fiction, the real-life folks have had their own biographies expanded.
Back in the day, my co-author Vincent Rendoni and I placed six of our nine stories included here: “The Big One” in Lime Hawk; “Blood Red” in Fiction Southeast; “Frozen River” in Atticus Review; “Jumpers” in Burrow Press Review; and “Return of the Hunger Artists” and “Seafaring in Minnesota” in LitroNY.
