Home by C. Baxter Kruger is a profound exploration of the deepest longings of the human soul and their true fulfillment in the life of the Triune God. First published in 1994 and newly republished in 2023, this short but powerful book invites readers to rethink what it truly means to be "home."
At its core, Home addresses a universal ache-a haunting sense that we are not fully where we belong. This "inconsolable dream," as Kruger calls it (inspired by C.S. Lewis' phrase "the inconsolable secret"), is not a flaw or fantasy, but a signal-a deep inner echo of the reality for which we were created. That reality is a life of union and communion in the relationship of the Father, Son, and Spirit. This book proclaims the stunning truth that we are not outsiders or beggars, but beloved children already included in Jesus' own relationship with his Father.
Kruger, a theologian known for his accessible style and deep insight into the relational nature of the Gospel, unfolds this vision in three brief yet rich chapters: "The Inconsolable Dream," "The Mystery," and "The Way Home." He examines the hunger we all feel for belonging, peace, joy, and love-not as something to be earned or manufactured, but as something that has already been given in Jesus Christ. He explains how our identity and inclusion in the Triune life are not distant theological concepts, but present and transforming realities.
Drawing from Scripture, early Church theology, and stories from everyday life, Kruger paints a vivid picture of God's hospitality and our place in it. He challenges the religious mindset that imagines God as distant or disapproving and instead presents the Gospel as a revelation of God's embrace. We are not meant to live as hired servants hoping to be tolerated, but as sons and daughters who are already cherished.
Home is not just a theological treatise; it's an invitation-to see yourself as Jesus sees you, to rest in the security of being loved without condition, and to let that reality shape your life. It is a call to stop striving for what we already have and instead wake up to the joy and freedom of participating in Jesus' relationship with the Father through the Spirit.
Whether you are inside the church and still wrestling with shame and alienation, or outside it and wondering if real belonging is even possible, this book speaks with clarity, compassion, and courage. It offers not sentimentality, but substance-anchoring our longings in the eternal love of God that has already come for us.
Home is ultimately about more than theology. It is about reality-the reality that in Jesus, we are already home.
