Synopsis

Fresh cider, warm doughnuts, and a locked-room murder only a clever baker and her six-pound terrier can solve.

Some secrets are kept under lock and key. Others are hidden in plain sight.

October in Pelican Bay brings crisp autumn air, spiced molasses cookies, and the town's beloved Haunt and Howl festival. For baker Noelle Thomas, the weekend means setting up her cider doughnut stand at Ellery Orchard and keeping her spirited Yorkshire terrier, Nutmeg, from getting tangled in the bunting.

The friendly competition turns bitter when a crate of festival apples is sabotaged, an antique lighthouse lantern vanishes from the rafters, and local handyman Denton Rue is found dead inside the orchard's walk-in cold room—with the heavy iron latch bolted from the outside.

When a phantom light flickers to life on the coastal dunes hours later, the superstitious town is quick to blame a legendary local ghost. But Noelle knows cold rooms don't latch themselves. Armed with an index-card tracker, an eye for things that don't add up, and a tiny dog with an uncanny nose for hidden evidence, Noelle dives into the investigation.

From a polished cider celebrity with a rehearsed smile to a trail of missing keys, forged scores, and a fourteen-year-old grudge, Noelle must separate coastal folklore from hard facts before a calculated killer slips away for good.
