Synopsis

The Mystical Rose of the New World is a Catholic guide to the life and spirituality of Saint Rose of Lima, the Peruvian mystic and first canonized saint born in the Americas. Catholic author and theologian Edward P. Martin explores Saint Rose's Dominican spirituality, contemplative prayer, Eucharistic devotion, penance, service to the poor and sick, and radical love for Jesus Christ-while showing how her extraordinary spiritual life can speak to Catholics living in a busy and distracted world.

What can a seventeenth-century mystic teach us about finding God in modern life?

More than we might expect.

Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Saint Rose of Lima became one of the most remarkable Catholic mystics of the New World. She is often remembered for her severe penances and extraordinary austerities. But focusing only on those dramatic details can obscure the woman behind them.

Rose was a woman of intense prayer, deep Eucharistic devotion, hidden sacrifice, compassion for the poor and sick, and an overwhelming desire to belong completely to Jesus Christ.

The Mystical Rose of the New World looks beyond the more startling elements of her story to uncover a spirituality that remains surprisingly relevant today.

Inside this Catholic guide, readers will discover how Saint Rose can inspire them to:

- Cultivate Interior Silence - Create space for prayer, recollection, and awareness of God amid constant noise, screens, activity, and distraction.

- Deepen Love for the Eucharist - Discover why Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament stood at the center of Rose's spiritual life.

- Explore Catholic Mysticism and Contemplative Prayer - Encounter Rose's intense interior life and her desire for deeper union with Christ.

- Embrace Hidden Holiness - Find freedom from the modern pressure for recognition, attention, achievement, and constant visibility.

- Understand Penance Properly - Place Rose's severe austerities within their historical and spiritual context while discovering prudent ways to practice sacrifice and self-denial today.

- Serve the Poor and Sick - Learn from Rose's personal care for suffering people and the connection between contemplation and Christian charity.

- Discover Dominican Spirituality - Explore the tradition of prayer, penance, truth, and love of God that helped shape Rose as a Dominican tertiary.

- Find God in Ordinary Life - Discover how home, work, relationships, difficulties, and small sacrifices can become places of encounter with Christ.

You do not need to imitate everything a saint did in order to learn from that saint.

Understanding Saint Rose does not mean reproducing the extreme austerities of another historical period. It means looking beneath them to discover what animated her extraordinary life: a radical love for Jesus Christ.

Saint Rose's answer to a distracted world is therefore not simply more penance.

It is greater attention to God.

For Catholics interested in Saint Rose of Lima, Peruvian saints, saints of the Americas, Catholic mysticism, Dominican spirituality, Eucharistic devotion, contemplative prayer, penance, and holiness in everyday life, The Mystical Rose of the New World offers an accessible introduction to a fascinating saint and a spirituality centered on intimacy with Christ.

Step away from the noise. Enter the interior garden. And discover how ordinary life can become the soil in which holiness grows.
