“The practical necessity of being preserved and handed on by word of mouth only, must be constantly borne in mind in considering the development of Indian verse forms. It operated to keep poetry tied to its twin-born melody, which assisted in memory, and was constantly at work modifying the native tendency to adjust the rhythm to every changing movement of the story.”
Bringing together the chants, songs and oral legends of Native American tribes from around the country, The Path on the Rainbow: An Anthology of Songs and Chants from the Indians of North America functions as an authoritative guide to Indigenous verse as untouched and uninfluenced by European colonialism in the early nineteenth century.
Professionally typeset with a brand new cover, George W. Cronyn’s The Path on the Rainbow: An Anthology of Songs and Chants from the Indians of North America (1918) is a classic of Native American that explores the relationship between, “Indian verse and the ultimate literary destiny of America.”

George W. Cronyn (1888 - 1969) was an American writer and editor. He is known to have written at least one book of poetry, one play, as well as a book on communism and Peire Vidal. He complied two anthologies of Native American poetry, most notably, The Path on the Rainbow: An Anthology of Songs and Chants from the Indians of North America in 1918.
Perhaps the first authoritative collection of Indigenous verse, The Path on the Rainbow: An Anthology of Songs and Chants from the Indians of North America brings together the poetical productions of Native tribes throughout the country, in hopes of adding the voice of the Indigenous peoples to the literary canon and history of the United States.
