My journals of the 1990s began as a health record and gradually turned into an account of my days and nights just to see if they added up to anything. Most of the entries are therefore a simple inventory of my activities and interests, a way to measure how well I used my time--what I was thinking about, doing, and feeling, and most of all what I was writing--and the frustrations that came along with it. One of the continuing laments throughout the journals is that I hadn't done nearly enough of the real work I longed to do. Collectively, they recreate for better or worse the person I was--and still am.
