Synopsis

Yvayn and Rolius travel along the Drakon Plain to find anyone who survived the Great Undoing in Semia. After a skirmish with a lone werewolf, Yvayn is injured and has to recover in Mentoshia, one of the few surviving cities that witnessed the army come across the Drakon Plain. Yvayn and Rolius befriend the citizens of Mentoshia before they go out into the plain again to find answers. After a strange encounter with Cuia, they meet a strange woman named Coi, who seems to know them. They also find the woodwives for the woodmen but realize they still cannot see each other—the three return to Mentoshia before heading to the West to find anyone else who might have survived. Yvayn discovers, with the help of Coi, that he is seeing more things that were once hidden within the woods in plain sight. After an encounter with a wayward bone witch, Yvayn gains insight into the world of the hidden entities of the world. They hurry along after finding that most of Semia is in ruins. They go through the Leptonis Mountains to Mesnar to find Ivar and Ernor, where Yvayn and Coi call the horses to come. They teach the people of Mesnar to ride once again before they head south to the Anka Pass, which is how they plan to get to Menia. In the desert wastes of Narabra, Yvayn encounters another strange member of The Order who helps Yvayn understand more of his past lives and prepares him for who he must face before crossing the mountains.
Yvayn befriends an old ally, Brynstakaya, the King of the Dragons. The dragons protect them as they pass through the Anka Pass back home to reunite with his family, only to find that his wife, mother, and son are all being held prisoner in Careath by a zealot named Förnor. He is introduced to Pashtan, whom he recognizes as Old Bear, but he knows it is him because of the growing knowledge within him. He uses Brynstakaya and Pashtan to rescue the women in Careath, but they do not see Darion, his son, with them. He stays behind in Careath and vows to find him. He is beaten and taken prisoner only to find his son, but he does not realize this because he loses his memory from the beating.
