Transition has been an issue in secondary schools for many decades. There are two sides to the transition process: ensuring the new students settle in to secondary school life and maintaining momentum in student progress. Many secondary schools put great effort into settling their new students in but that, on its own, is not enough. An explicit plan for the maintaining of momentum needs to be in place for those students passing through the transition period. If that plan is not in place and the 'moment' is missed, student progress will be slower in secondary school than it was in primary school.
In this book, Peter Jeffcock argues that a dedicated approach to the academic aspect of transition can reap rewards that continue throughout secondary school life, offering improved life chances for students and leading to improved outcomes for the school.
Peter Jeffcock is a former headteacher and one of a relatively small number of professionals whose unusual experience has involved leadership roles in both primary and secondary schools. His interest in transition is long standing and he has led courses on the subject for education leadership groups and classroom teachers.
