The anonymous Elizabethan play Sir Thomas More for many years survived in manuscript form only. It did not appear in printed form until the early 20th century, when W. W. Greg produced a scholarly edition. Because the manuscript was incomplete, it was not published or performed in the era in which it was written. The play, a dramatization of the life of the humanist scholar and advisor to King Henry VIII, Sir Thomas More, movingly captures the spirit of the man, as perceived by successful dramatists of Shakespeare's day. Some readers have suggested that William Shakespeare contributed a scene to the play, but it was probably a collaborative effort by Anthony Munday, Henry Chettle, and Thomas Dekker. In an effort to make this neglected masterpiece of Elizabethan drama available to modern audiences, the editor has prepared this acting edition, which preserves the original lines and stage directions, amended as necessary for theatrical coherence and continuity.
