Appreciating Cultural Diversity: An Interdisciplinary Perspective provides students with a collection of readings that focus on diversity as a society-wide social and cultural phenomenon that affects all social situations and institutions. The essays in the book not only introduce the reader to different types of cultural diversity but also shed light on the social injustices people from nondominant cultures face daily.
The opening unit introduces readers to the discipline of sociology, a discipline that provides us with excellent tools and perspectives to study social phenomena such as cultural diversity. Additional units and readings address the concept of culture, cultural relativism, Milton J. Bennett's developmental model of intercultural sensitivity, the relationship between diversity and democracy, and diversity training and the college experience. Students learn about the social construction of race, social class-based diversity, and diversity involving gender and gender identity. The closing unit examines religious diversity. Editor's introductions and post-reading questions throughout the anthology increase student engagement and retention of the material.
Designed to help students better understand diversity and social justice in contemporary American society, Appreciating Cultural Diversity is an ideal resource for courses and programs in sociology, DEI, and cultural diversity.
