Synopsis

ELUSIVE SOLACE comprises poems written after Shavin moved into her (most likely) final dwelling in 2017, an unheated 1924 farmhouse on six wild acres. She cherishes the semi-rural “desiccate prairie” for this wildness, although hail, maniacal winds and brutal sun in any season destroy so much lovingly nurtured or simply set down. In this volume, she engages themes of aging, longing, loss and mortality, but also, perhaps by default, acceptance, perseverance and even joy, sometimes via word-play, irony and quirky dark humor. Many animals, both companion and livestock, comfort, inspire and/or elicit sorrow as she journeys her silent land, chosen land/...both longing and not longing for touch, a biome she considers my wafer,/and holy. The paperback edition includes 48 color images by the author—mostly photography or enhanced versions—but the writing does not require these visuals for clarity.
