Synopsis

This book is the second volume in the Standard Sacred Text series. In the follow up to Volume 1, “A Philosophical Grounding for a Standard Sacred Text,” authored by Van Kleeck Jr., Van Kleeck Sr. examines ten select direct and indirect references to Scripture’s providential care throughout the canon demonstrating an exegetical grounding for a Standard Sacred Text. Each passage has robust historic exegetical support, arguing for the presence of the loci of Providential Preservation in Holy Scripture. The topic under consideration is recognized in the 1647 Westminster Confession Ch. 1, Sec 8 which says of the Scripture, “being immediately inspired by God, and, by His singular care and providence kept pure in all ages, are therefore authentical.” The history of the English Bible, Post-Reformation dogmaticians and pre-and post-critical sources are references throughout the volume. Van Kleeck finds that the Providential Preservation of Scripture cannot be classified, categorized, or easily referenced, but as a revealed work, Scripture’s preservation reflects the complexity of God’s eternal decree in the flow of redemptive history. The trajectory of this work is to show that the Scripture does indeed tell of its own preservation, thus providing exegetical grounds to argue theologically and systematically for a Bibliological category of Providential Preservation. Each of the ten passages are examined, and practical interpretive comments are made to the end that every believer might have their confidence in the Bible strengthened. Van Kleeck concludes that Scripture does indeed teach its own providential preservation. This work of preserving Scripture did not occur through some miraculous act of special providence, but through God’s providential “fatherly hand,” drawing ten thousands of ten thousand acts of the human will together to accomplish His great eschatological plan of redemption.
