Why is this book titled Story (by) Design? Here is the simple but not so obvious or apparent truth. The success of any story depends on a balance of two key elements. One is on the rightness and accuracy as told within the given story. Two is how a particular story is functional, shaped, and guided by the key insights of the overall design.
So, the reasoning as stated in the title [and truth] of this book, goes like this: story is the right brain, primarily creative. The left brain oversees design, and focuses, for example, on math, logic, chess-playing ability, income taxes, and, yes, . . . language. Altogether, Story (by) Design provides a functional and insightful balanced approach to thinking, creating, and the overall order of making—following insights into the left- and right-brain functions. While there are perhaps other options to choose from in the process of making a story, the primary choice made in regard to a particular storyline and its final execution depends on the insight of the design that shapes the telling of the story.
