Synopsis

In "From Where I Stand" Jeffrey Byrd offers a fresh perspective on the age-old issue of the depth of racial violence that grips America while giving his own personal accounts and experiences through this autobiographical tale. His bold attempt to draw parallels between racially motivated historical events alongside current attitudes and behaviors reveals a more nefarious side of our society. In "FROM WHERE I STAND", Byrd challenges what seemed to be ironclad narratives in his bid to reimagine history through the unfiltered lens of violence that shaped the America we know today. Furthermore, it makes the plea that the present ongoing ignorance that abides through the old narrative of colorblindness will eventually lead this nation down a path of ultimate destruction and demise. His allusion to a second civil war is undeniably what many in our society often discuss in private, but never truly have the courage to discuss in public. "FROM WHERE I STAND" provides us with a modern narrative on race identity while tackling the creation of Whiteness that will force the reader to confront conventional norms about its true purpose and role in our nation. And finally, in a determinant ultimatum, that if we are to get it right or perish, there must be real acknowledgment, reconciliation, and repair.
