Synopsis
Sequel to 'The Broken Fiddle', this novel follows the separate lives of a couple estranged by misunderstanding and violence in Ireland's border region during the Partition of the island in 1922. Protestant farmer, Matthew Henderson, struggles with various losses....his maid who had become more than a maid, his best friend across 'the fence', his good reputation in a tight Ulster community. Sally-Anne Sweeney, returned to her Gaeltacht area of west Donegal from her role as Matthew's hired hand, keeps her head down and nurses her grievances for 20 years...until, on a whim, she writes a forgiving letter to him. Matthew reads in amazement. She says she is emigrating to America...but is this letter a late cry for some sort of reconciliation? With little time to lose before she sails, Matthew sets aside his inherent reserve, drives across the Donegal border and into the west to try to find her. Will his impetuous risk be worth the effort?
