The author writes: "In seeking to place this author in the history of ideas it seems at first sight remarkable that he should have been not only a precursor of the French traditionalists, but an inspirer of Nietzsche. Gobineau was an aristocrat who all his life fought the democratic leveling-trend. Pessimistic and little inclined to believe in progress he reacted against eighteenth Century rationalism and its abstract notion of man."
