Später machten die Disney-Studios einen der erfolgreichsten Animationsfilme aller Zeiten daraus. Das Buch enthält darüber hinaus zahlreiche weniger bekannte Geschichten und Episoden, die nicht minder spannend und lesenswert sind. Die Original-Illustrationen stammen von W. H. Drake und Rudyard Kiplings Vater John Lockwood Kipling, erschienen 1895 in der amerikanischen Ausgabe im Verlag Doubleday, Doran & Company Inc.
