This fascinating work is both a family history and an autobiography. The story begins in the Falkland Islands in the nineteenth century and embraces the last gasps of Imperial China, the economic development of Argentina, the origins of one of the big four accountancy firms, PwC, and the author’s ancestral participation in two world wars.
Grandfather Rupert commanded his Battalion of the London Regiment at the Battle of Cambrai. Father, John, was a Corporal in the Royal Canadian Dragoons who saw action in Italy at the fourth Battle of Monte Cassino and the liberation of Holland. Uncle Graham was a naval officer whose ships took part in the D-Day operation and later in the Pacific on missions against the Japanese mainland. To enlist, he travelled back from Argentina to England on a passenger ship that was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic.
The author’s parents, too, had a close brush with the German pocket battleship Graf Spee. Following their marriage in Buenos Aires in 1947, the story moves to England and the family’s roots in Nottingham where Sneath’s father managed the Playhouse Theatre.
Back in Argentina, cousin James was growing up on the family estancia. He had already completed his national service when the Falklands War began in the late spring of 1982. More recently he has represented Argentina at the UN on the Falklands/Malvinas issue.
The second part of this rich collection of family memories describes the author’s experience as an operational lawyer working alongside the Americans in Iraq and his time as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire.
If you love reading about British and war history, generations past, and general memoirs, this book will prove a real treat for you. Well-written, packed with detail and an excellent resource for posterity.
