Synopsis

Wellbeing is a term used in many different fields, including finance, economics, ecology and digital technology, but, for our purposes, it is highly personal – rooted in and nurtured by childhood and life experience, culture and environment. Wellbeing underpins and informs how you feel about your place in the world.

Working with young children can be both joyful and stressful. It places a lot of physical and emotional demands on staff, who spend much of the day nurturing the wellbeing of children and supporting their personal, social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills. The role also requires staff to consider the needs of parents, colleagues and even challenges faced by the local community.

During the pandemic, many of us experienced fear and fatigue as well as wonderful instances of deep kindness, love and support from our families, friends, colleagues and communities. Now that things are returning to normal, we must ensure that wellbeing remains central to organisational strategies and not just relegated to random selection of occasional treats and activities. It should be the guiding principle for all organisations and sit at the very heart of policy and practice.

This handbook focuses on the ten elements of wellbeing. It is written to show that wellbeing can be integrated into our daily life in the nursery, not something to do before or after work. Full of tips and ideas, it can be read or dipped into by anyone working in an Early Years setting and encourages them think about ‘being well to do well’
