Fourteen-year-old Val and his older brother Jacques are lost in the Caribbean Ocean when a mass of fibrous tentacles pulls their rowboat into a cloud of mist and crushes it. Kids carrying symbiont amphibious creatures welcome them to Phyta, a floating paradise where the symbiont pairs swim like fish and glide like birds as they ride the tropical storms. Jacques is an instant convert. He bonds with a symbiont and begins learning to swim and fly. Like all the other Phytans, he barely remembers home.
Val remembers everything and does not care for Phyta…until he discovers its caches of gold and an underwater art studio better then he’d ever dreamed. He takes a symbiont, at least until his can find a way to get his brother and a big pile of treasure back to their village to find their missing mom. It isn’t so easy. Phyta has secrets and dangers that Val cannot resist poking into. Why does it make kids forget? And what happens to the ones who never make it back from the storms?
