Synopsis

In the peaceful Kent village of Little Scampering Alana Merde is found stabbed to death on her patio.

It emerges she was not well liked but surely nobody detested her enough to want to kill her?

With that in mind the police become convinced of the guilt of Alana’s husband Carl.

Recently retired widow, Edith Footlong, comes to realise that there are other possibilities and begins her own investigation. As she nears the truth she unwittingly places her own life in danger.

Readers were introduced to DCI Sheelagh Mehedren in the forerunner to this book, ‘Death at the Oast’. In that investigation the DCI’s work was hampered by an amateur sleuth, octogenarian Ernest Pawden. This time she comes up against an investigative Mrs Footlong and local reporter, Sally Cainton.

Sally looks to lift the lid on the idyllic façade of a rural hamlet and also inadvertently ends up in the killer’s sights.

As with The Chortleford Mystery and Death at the Oast the story is told in a more gentle fashion with humour, pathos, poignancy and satire, and just a little sauce to add some spice.
