Synopsis

On the second centenary of the discovery of the 'Red Lady' of Paviland by the archaeologist, William Buckland, Swansea writer Matthew M. C. Smith commemorates this extraordinary archaeological find - the first human burial in Europe with grave goods - the remains of a mesolithic hunter - found in a remote cave on the Gower peninsula. In prose, poetry, photos and an illustration by Welsh artist by Rebecca Wainwright, the 'Red Lady' is evoked and Smith challenges the fact that most of the remains, such as the skeleton, are in Oxford, not in Swansea. This is a moving, time-travelling, powerful pamphlet by the Pushcart-prize and 'Best of the Net'-nominated author of 'The Keeping of Aeons' and 'Origin: 21 Poems'.
