Geckos, Incense and the Moon is a deeply personal and vividly written travel memoir by a woman who, at age 73, leaves her home to live in Vietnam for a year-just as the world, unexpectedly, is shutting down due to the pandemic. Prompted by a previous visit to her expat son and a growing fascination with Vietnamese culture and Buddhism, she makes the leap-arriving just before the borders close in March 2020. What unfolds is a rich, layered journey: life in a small beach village, the challenges of navigating daily routines in a foreign language, the beauty of local customs, and new friendships with expats from all over the world. She also brings readers into the complex and honest story of her relationship with her son, who struggles with alcoholism. With his permission, she shares both the loving and painful moments they experience together. This memoir explores what it means to live and even thrive outside your comfort zone. About the Author
Anja Woltman was born in The Hague, Holland. Her early writing experience included contributing poetry and articles to her college newspaper, where she also served as editor. After moving to the U.S. in 1971 through a Foreign Teachers Program, she published an article in a Dutch weekly opinion magazine about American football-then a little-known element of U.S. culture in Europe. She took a break from writing while adapting to English but later honed her skills through professional writing.Anja and her husband raised two sons and built their own home in Vermont. After their divorce in 1994, she relocated to Sonoma County, California, where she still lives. In addition to teaching, Anja held leadership roles in nonprofit organizations, serving as both Program Director and Executive Director. She is currently retired and has one grandchild. This is her first book.
