August 1928. The Hyder family's apple orchard is destroyed in a hailstorm. Fifteen-year-old Bo and his parents pack whatever belongings their horse-drawn wagon could bear and move down the mountain in search of a new life.
Arriving in Catawba, North Carolina, a company town, Bo's father gets a job at the cotton mill. The family is soon embroiled in the oppressive clash between mill bosses and union organizers.
With few options and no resources, Bo joins forces with Seth Bartlett, a moonshine runner, in a violent struggle to extricate his family and the people of Catawba from their no-win situation.
