In what he describes as an ordinary working life, the author has managed to cross paths with some of the least ordinary characters that God saw fit to drop on the earth. Referring to these characters as eccentric doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of their absurdity. Most of them are simply bonkers.
Maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised that the author encounters madcap characters during his early working life in and around Social Security offices in Liverpool and the Fylde coast. And yet, during his time in what are, traditionally, the less colourful worlds of aerospace, and defence and financial services, crackpots continue to appear with alarming regularity.
It is perhaps time to challenge his description of his working life. In what ordinary workplace would we witness briefcases being thrown into the Irish Sea, have a senior architect replaced by the comedian, Billy Connolly, and a famous glove puppet make an appearance in a board meeting?
Were it not for the author’s capacity to recall such events — some of which happened fifty years ago — and his ability to bring these oddball characters to life through engaging storytelling, we would never have met them. And that would be a shame.
Get the kettle on and settle down to read one of the most amusing compilations of workplace anecdotes since the demise of the travelling circus.
