It isn't that students don't want to speak, it's just that they don't always have the courage - maybe they're tongue tied, lost for words or just don't have the vocabulary to take part in a conversation. We all know that "Conversation starters" designed to get the ball rolling and get students speaking in English aren't always enough. They get the conversation started - and then what? Students run out of things to say (we all do) and the ball is back in the teacher's court. Again. So, this book will be an enormous help to teachers and students alike. The focus is on the student - and not the teacher - speaking English by way of telling stories. Its practical techniques will help them build language skills and confidence as they make that quantum leap from passive listener to active storyteller. And they do this with the help of an illustrated and numbered story map. So, what is a story map? It's a visual description of the story. With the help of images, the storyteller introduces the listener to the characters and setting before leading them through the events right up to the ending. There are ten short stories, each with its own illustrated and numbered story map and related activities. The first few stories are around 350-400 words long, so students can remember them easily. Then, of course, the stories get longer and have more detail as students get more comfortable and confident in their storytelling. These activities are also, of course, two direction. Storyteller and story listener. We all enjoy a good story and listening to one is a great exercise for language students. Students listening to students telling a story can often be more motivating and entertaining than listening to the teacher and they will understand the meaning even when they don't recognise all the words. There are also Lead in, Word Tree and other activities relating to each story which help students remember vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the stories.
