Synopsis
The web, smartphones and artificial intelligence are indispensable parts of our everyday lives, but they are becoming increasingly invasive. Used at too young an age, they disrupt the acquisition of basic skills such as language and can lead to addictive behavior. The web does not provide children with the long-term coherence their brains need. And AI is progressing so quickly that it is upsetting education and society at large, and generating fears that we may be losing control.
We need to adapt our teaching strategies with a better understanding of the young brain under construction in the web and AI environment. But despite thousands of scientific results, we still lack a practical overview of the brain’s natural resources to develop better educational outcomes and address the challenges of the web and AI.
To meet this urgent need, we propose for the first time, the Panoramic Brain. This is a groundbreaking model of mental development, encompassing the full range of the brain’s resources to foster successful progress of skills, intelligence, personality and creativity: the 4 major objectives of education. Based on a synthesis of results at the 4 levels of Brain organization, the Panoramic Brain explains the 4 progressions of mental capacities as a set of 4 Essential Brain Games, where children and teenagers encounter more or less success, depending upon how they play. The Panoramic Brain helps design long-term winning strategies to progress fully in the world of the web and AI, to pilot the web wisely. It aims to be practical and inspiring for parents, teachers and students.
The authors: the book is co-written by:
Yves Burnod (Ecole Polytechnique, Neuroscience PhD) is a brain scientist, pioneer in multi-scale modeling of the brain unifying its 4 biological levels (brain Atlas, neural nets of the Cortical Column, neuronal programs with neuromodulators, proteins of synaptic plasticity); he set up the first INSERM-CNRS labs and EU programs to use artificial intelligence to synthetize by multi-scale models the gold mine of scientific results on the brain.
Niki Burnod is a teacher committed to educational innovation to boost the progress of mental capacities of all children, combining progress and pleasure as a continuous exciting game, motivating apathetic teenagers through coherent and rewarding discoveries, finding new learning and creative pathways for children who are struggling at school.
