Nabih Berri: The Southern Force in the Lebanese State is a political biography that traces the life and institutional role of one of Lebanon's most enduring public figures. Rather than repeating partisan narratives, the book offers a documented, analytical account of how a leader from a historically deprived region in the South became a central actor inside the Lebanese state.
Born to a family rooted in Jabal Amel and shaped by the realities of southern Lebanon, Berri's political path unfolded alongside the major turning points of modern Lebanese history: the social and political mobilization of the Shiʿa community, the rise of Imam Musa al-Sadr, the emergence and evolution of the Amal Movement, the devastation of the Civil War, the negotiations that produced the Taif Agreement, the post-war reconstruction period, and the repeated national crises that continue to test Lebanon's institutions.
Drawing on historical scholarship, political analysis, and institutional records, the book follows Berri's path from law and student activism to his leadership of Amal and his long tenure as Speaker of Parliament. It examines how the Shiʿa moved from political marginalization to full participation in the state, how the South's experience of war, occupation, and neglect reshaped national debates over sovereignty and defense, and how parliament functioned as a space for negotiation in a deeply divided political system.
