Synopsis
The Ballad of the Basque. Maine Road. Wednesday 6th February 1957. European Cup quarter-finals second leg. A date to become so poignant in Manchester United’s history a year to the day for far darker reasons. The Busby Babes are 5-3 down from the first-leg against the wonderful Spanish champions, the mighty Basques of Athletico Bilbao. With Old Trafford’s floodlights still a month from being ready, the drama moved across the city to Moss Side, for a game many United supporters of a certain vintage still regard as the greatest ever. It was an evening when red shirted heroes were required and none more so than Tommy Taylor. The ‘‘Smiling Executioner’’. Time to go back now to a cold, misty, February evening with 70,000 supporters roaring ‘UNITED!’ towards the heavens, a strong smell of tobacco in the air, a light smattering of snow covering the pitch and a bitterly cold rain driving down. A miracle was required, prayers were being whispered on the terraces but could United do it?
