Synopsis
Uncover the profound story behind the shifting landscapes of language and memory in Alexander Paul Burton's Reclaiming Memory: The Linguistic Evolution of Tharionese Place Names in Post-Roman Britain and Their Resonance in The Hollow Vale. This compelling companion to The Hollow Vale embarks on an intellectual journey through the etymological and cultural evolution of Tharionese place names, unearthing their origins, transformations, and enduring echoes in the South West of England.
Blending historical linguistics, cultural geography, and Burton’s unparalleled myth-making, this work deciphers how Tharionese place names—steeped in the metaphysical Wyrd and collective memory—survived the tides of Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and medieval influences. Traverse the spiral of history, from sacred hills like Tor Velden to the mist-cloaked River Parythin (now Parrett), and uncover how modern names like Tiverton and Bodmin carry traces of their ancient Tharionese roots.
With insights drawn from The Hollow Vale and its Companion Guide, as well as academic research on post-Roman Britain, this book delves deep into the narrative of how names reclaim identity and heritage. Perfect for historians, linguists, and lovers of mythic storytelling, Reclaiming Memory is both an essential resource and a captivating journey into the threads of memory that shape our understanding of place and belonging.
