A detailed and authoritative journey through the origins, rise, and global diaspora of the Gordon name.
For centuries, the Gordons shaped the history of the north-east of Scotland. Their story begins in the medieval Borders, where the first “de Gordon” landholders appear in surviving charters, and follows their remarkable ascent after the family’s relocation to Strathbogie under the early Stewart kings. From these beginnings grew one of Scotland’s most influential lineages: a house that commanded major estates, forged powerful alliances, and played a decisive role in the political and military life of the nation.
This book traces that entire journey with clarity and depth. It examines:
the early landholdings in Berwickshire
the move north and the creation of the Gordon heartland
castles, strongholds, and the development of territorial authority
alliances, marriages, and regional politics
the emergence of the Earls and Marquesses of Huntly
feuds, rivalries, and the pressures of national conflict
the transformation of Gordon identity across centuries
the great migrations that carried the name across the world
Alongside the history of chiefs and noble branches, this volume also considers the wider communities who lived under Gordon influence: the tenants, labourers, soldiers, ministers, emigrants, and settlers whose daily lives formed the broader Gordon world. Their experiences bring depth to the story and show how the surname travelled from rural parishes in the north-east to the farms, towns, and frontiers of Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
Written for readers who carry the Gordon name or descend from it, this book offers a clear, carefully researched account of how the family rose, adapted, endured, and spread across the globe. It is both a guide to the surname’s origins and a companion to the long journey that connects past and present.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This second edition of Gordon: A Clan History asks what Bydand, the family's word for standing fast, cost and earned the people who carried the name. On Holy Rood Day 1402, under English arrows on Homildon Hill, Adam, lord of Gordon, knelt before Sir John Swinton, his family's old enemy, asked to be knighted by his hand, and went down the hill beside him to die. The Gordons came out of a Berwickshire parish, took Strathbogie from Robert Bruce and for three centuries held the north-east as the Crown's lieutenants and its rebels. The book follows them through the record: an earl's daughter married to the pretender Perkin Warbeck, the 4th Earl's corpse tried for treason, the charge at Glenlivet in 1594, the fire at Frendraught, the laird of Haddo beheaded in his linen shirt, and the 2nd Marquess's answer to the Covenanters: "You may take my Head from my shoulders, but not my Heart from my Soveraigne." It stays with the people below the chiefs: tenants on the 1696 poll book, men marched out for the Prince in 1745, a prisoner shipped to the plantations and freed on Martinique, and the crofters of Barra and South Uist, shipped to Quebec in 1851 by a Gordon landlord, who told a royal commission in 1883 what it had cost them. It follows the name to Moscow, Savannah, Prince Edward Island and Adelaide. With the chiefs and the houses of the name, places to visit, a chronology, a records guide for tracing a Gordon line, and in print a full index. For readers who carry the name, or descend from someone who did. Complete in itself. This item is printed on demand.
