The present volume undertakes an examination of one of the most profound crises in the history of the Catholic Church a crisis not merely of governance, catechesis, or discipline, but of sacrifice itself. The phenomenon we now witness in the global Church is not accidental, spontaneous, or isolated. It is the result of an underlying theological rupture: a progressive abandonment of the Catholic understanding of the Mass as the true and propitiatory Sacrifice of Calvary made sacramentally present upon the altar.
The disappearance of this sacrificial consciousness has precipitated a cascade of secondary collapses doctrinal, moral, vocational, and communal. As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, “The whole power of the priesthood is founded upon the Eucharistic Sacrifice.”¹ When the sacrifice is obscured, the priesthood is obscured.
