In a dream, Adam Gabriel saw a young couple blasting away dirt and smoke from a neglected former military building in “The Common”. Simultaneously, but separately, the local lawyer, had exactly the same dream. Thus began the project which would transform the area. The Commonwealth Estate (known locally as “The Common”) was a post-war developer’s dream, but a resident’s nightmare. Ruled by fear, and a breeding ground for crime, the police despaired of it and the Town Council had virtually given up on it. But some people hoped for change and secured help from outside – a long way outside. This tale includes angels, but they are just part of the story. Rather, it’s a human story about people who were afraid and others who were courageous; it’s about people who were full of faith and generosity, and others who were full of greed and hatred; it’s about a crushed and despairing community that yearned for change and the dramatic, and sometimes violent, events that restored hope.
