Synopsis

I have always been fascinated by the concept of time travel. The very first book I ever had published was a time travel story, Peter’s Magic Fountain Pen which I wrote for my son’s twelfth birthday back in 1992. Reading it today you would need a time machine in order to travel back and find out what a fountain pen actually was !

Writing these words in 2025 I am approaching my seventy-fifth birthday and believe it or not I am looking forward to it. However, going back in time a couple of years I did not think I would ever reach my three-quarters of a century. I was ill, very ill. My wonderful medical team once my condition had been diagnosed was able to restore my well-being enabling me to be a fit the healthy old man I am today. Delete the word old because the time machine in my head refuses to allow me to be anywhere near the middle of my seventh decade !

Gathering the information needed to diagnose my condition, to wave a medical magic wand and restore my good health included four CT scans. I am not saying that you should add having a CT scan to your to-do list but if you do then I hope it will be for you the special experience it was for me. It could even be the time machine it was for me. Well within this story anyway !

Ending this introduction allow me to take you back to 1992 and Peter’s Magic Fountain Pen. I wrote the story not using a fountain pen but a Biro pen. I then typed up however many thousands of words in order to send them to my publisher. I used a typewriter, you’ll need to pop into a museum if you want to use one today. The typewriter was invented in 1868, I assume George Orwell used this relatively new invention in 1895 to write his novel The Time Machine. It wasn’t until the early days of the twenty-first century that laptops the like of which I am here using became common instruments of typing.

Towards the end of my writing the Magic Fountain Pen story for my son I must have slipped into a parallel universe. Peter stopped using his fountain pen and had no need for a computer keyboard the like I am here using on my laptop, his final journey in time took place with his speaking to his computer in order to explain his desired destination. Alexa did not appear until 2014, twenty-two years after her ancestor made its way into my time travel book !
