Synopsis

In the grit of an 1887 railway town, thirteen-year-old Herb Richardson lives the only life he knows: a world of hand-me-downs, coal dust and the stench of sheep. All he really wants is to go fishing with his Pa, a man who works himself into the ground just to keep a roof over their heads.
The glue that holds Herb’s world together finally lets go.
Herb escapes on the very train that runs twenty feet from his back door—a livestock wagon. To where? He doesn’t know. He finds himself in an industrial port stinking of lanolin, coal and mangrove mud. A world he never could have imagined: a harbour town that never sleeps, filled with machines that thump and whistle all day and night. It is a place full of shady characters wearing anything from rags and bare feet to top hats and shiny boots.
All alone with nothing but the clothes on his back and his father’s pocket watch, Herb must find salvation before he’s stolen away by the urchins of the night.
