Subotai: A Life in the Service of the Khans is a work of historical fiction. The premise of the book is that Subotai, the renowned Mongol general, has been granted his request to be allowed to go into retirement, however, the Great Khan Guyuk has asked that he sit down with a court appointed historian and recount his experiences in the many battles and campaigns he fought in to expand the Mongol empire.
While this conversation never occurred the events that Subotai narrates are historically accurate and based upon a thorough review of primary and secondary sources and the works of historians, researchers and academics. It therefore represents, I believe, the most complete accounting of Subotai's military activities yet available.
