Led by Commander Adam "Papa Smurf" Silver, the Ghost Unit has operated in the dark for eighteen months. But when the Shadow Committee targets their grieving families to lure them out, Adam and his men execute a desperate, one-way rescue mission that severs their ties to Earth forever.
Marooned in a hyper-advanced deep-space sanctuary known as the Borderland, the team soon discovers that human betrayal is the least of their problems. The activation of Earth's ancient transit gates has awakened an apocalyptic threat: the Architects, a parasitic, planet-consuming biological swarm.
With a billion-strong cybernetic armada bearing down on their new home, the Ghost Unit must forge an uneasy alliance with the pristine Kaelen Ascendancy—an ancient alien race of "Builders." To survive, Adam and his men must trade their ballistic rifles for the fire of the gods, push their bodies to the absolute brink with experimental cybernetics, and transform from off-the-books infantry into the commanders of a planetary defense grid.
