Synopsis
Fougères, Brittany, 1806. Julienne Gauvain loses her mother, then her father, before she turns two. Wet nurses, a convent, an uncle’s orderly house in Paris: she learns early to keep quiet, to watch, and to keep her thoughts to herself.
As Juliette Drouet, actress, she learns the rivalries of the wings, the salons that judge a woman before they listen to her, and the friendship of an actress who laughs at everything. Then a name begins to travel through Paris, the name of the man writing a new drama for the Porte-Saint-Martin: Victor Hugo.
In February 1833 a story begins that will last fifty years. It will have its rules, its jealousies, its humiliations, exile on Guernsey, its griefs, and more than twenty thousand letters written by a woman history long kept in the poet’s shadow.
What is left of a whole life given to one man, when that man is the most famous of his century?

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Life of Juliette Drouet: Muse in the Shadow of Victor Hugo Behind one of the greatest names in French literature hid a woman whose story has too often remained in the shadows. Juliette Drouet was an actress, lover, copyist, and, for fifty years, Victor Hugo's companion, confidante, and pillar of support. But her life was far richer than a mere shadow. Orphaned in childhood, marked by loss, hardened by the theater, and transformed by love, Juliette lived through a 19th century ravaged by revolution, exile, scandal, and glory. In this gripping historical novel, Jean-Baptiste Beausejour brings Juliette Drouet to life with emotional depth and a wealth of period detail. From her humble childhood in Brittany to Parisian theaters and salons, from her first encounters with Hugo to an unwavering relationship tested by jealousy, distance, and public judgment, the novel explores what it means to dedicate one's life to a man and an ideal. Based on verified historical facts and inspired by Juliette's own letters, The Life of Juliette Drouet offers an intimate portrait of a woman who loved passionately, endured in silence, and refused to be overshadowed by a famous name. Perfect for readers who enjoy immersive historical novels, strong heroines, and literary romances rooted in real history, this novel will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.
