Out of Death Valley makes the case for a plant that grows where nothing else will, uses a fraction of the water that conventional crops demand, and produces biomethane, green methanol, and biochar at a scale that no other biological feedstock can match under conditions of heat and scarcity.

The plant is spineless Opuntia ficus-indica — the cactus. It has been studied in more than two thousand academic papers. It has been quietly proven across four continents. It has been systematically ignored by every major energy transition framework ever written.

The Colorado River is running out. Alfalfa — a single crop, grown primarily as animal feed — accounts for more than a quarter of all water consumed in the entire basin. The cactus requires one-fifth of that water, produces superior biomass yields, and can do something alfalfa cannot: feed an anaerobic digester that runs twenty-four hours a day regardless of whether the sun is shining.

Out of Death Valley is the argument that the energy transition has been designed around the landscapes, the technologies, and the constituencies of the wealthy temperate world — and that the forty percent of the planet it has ignored contains exactly the feedstock, on exactly the land, using exactly the water logic, that the hardest parts of decarbonization require.

The desert is not empty. It is full of energy. We just haven't learned to read it yet.
