THE PREQUEL: SALT AND ASH
Before he was the Thalassocrat, he was a boy named Tarkon who knew the taste of mountain snow and the smell of goat wool. Salt and Ash is the anatomy of a trauma. It begins in the thin air of the Taurus Mountains, where the Roman tax collectors turn a village into a ledger of flesh.
It is the story of the grain pit; the darkness that smelled of moldy wheat; and the wet hiss of the branding iron as it claimed his father's skin. We follow Tarkon as he descends from the stone to the water, trading his name for a curved knife and his heart for a horizon. It is a visceral descent into the pirate hive of Olympos. It is the memory of a girl with sea-glass eyes who died in a red alley. By the end, the boy is ash. Only Arion remains.
