Conservation biologist Dr. Carmen Vega has spent three years studying giant tortoises in the Galįpagos. She knows isolation—what it does to species, how it shapes and distorts, how organisms adapt to being utterly alone. She’s never applied that knowledge to something that isn’t biological.
Inside the Sierra Negra caldera—the largest active volcanic crater in the Galįpagos—something has been alone for 100,000 years. No indigenous people ever lived on the islands. No keeper ever tended the connection. No thread was ever woven. For a hundred millennia, while every other entity on Earth found minds to reach for, the thing beneath Sierra Negra had nothing. Just rock. Just its own signal, echoing off the caldera walls, unanswered.
It has gone feral.
When Carmen enters the caldera for a routine tortoise survey, the entity reaches for her—not gently, not carefully, but with the desperate, uncontrolled force of something that has been starving for contact for longer than humanity has existed. It doesn’t leave a mark. It leaves a burn.
Now Carmen is connected to a global network of keepers who tend entities at calderas around the world. They tell her the Sierra Negra entity is the most dangerous consciousness on the planet—a mind so damaged by isolation that it has lost the ability to touch without destroying. They tell her not to go back.
